2019 World Whisky of the Year - William Larue Weller 128.2 Proof

Part of the highly anticipated  annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, this year’s winner is the William Larue Weller. Each year sees the release of four expressions in the collection, including the Eagle Rare 17-year-old, Sazerac Rye 18-year-old, William Larue Weller, Thomas H. Hardy Rye, and George T. Stagg. Each release comes from a different batch, as the blend varies depending on the casks.

The winner here is a wheated bourbon distilled in 2005 and released in the fall of 2017. Named after a distiller who is said to be the first to replace rye with wheat in the mash bill, this year’s William Larue Weller is soft and smooth bursting with notes of caramel, marshmallows, and vanilla. Pepper and spice enter on the palate and the sweetness from the nose continues into a long finish. Sadly, this release has already sold out.

Second Finest Whisky in the World - Glen Grant Aged 18 Years

The only Scotch to make it into the top 4, the Glen Grant 18 has featured on Murray’s top 3 in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

A complex dram bringing forth winter spice, dried fruits, and an abundance of caramel on the nose, this is an interesting choice for the world’s second finest whisky.

Third Finest Whisky in the World - Thomas Handy Sazerac Rye 127.2 Proof

Another entry in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection and another release to sell out, the Thomas H. Handy is a huge favourite in the rye community and one that never stays on the shelves for long.

A cask strength bomb bursting with notes of toffee, cinnamon, molasses, and dried fruit.

Single Cask of the Year - Blanton’s Gold Edition Single Barrel

The brand known far and wide in the bourbon industry, the Blanton’s Gold Edition Single Barrel is a winner. Sadly, most of the casks released are shipped out of the US, making them very hard to find. As every release is a single cask it’s unlikely you can try this specific one, but fingers crossed.
